The CRSJ Stands With Ukraine

War is the very antithesis of peace and justice.  There are often, sadly, many justifiable reasons for war, but what is happening in Ukraine is not one of them.  There is no overwhelming economic, military, or political reason why Putin has chosen to invade Ukraine, now or ever.  Are there egotistical reasons, from his own personal satisfaction and the glory of the Russian Empire?  Yes.  But that is not justification for destroying the sovereignty, the human dignity, culture, and lives of the Ukrainian people.  It does not validate or excuse what he has done.

Students and staff at Shaw may wonder what the crisis in Ukraine has to do with them. “Why should we care what happens halfway around the world?”  We could answer simply, by stating the famous Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. maxim – “A threat to justice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”  Which is true.  But the situation in Ukraine has far reaching consequences that affect all Americans, not the least of which is economic.  Gas and oil prices are expected to rise, further hurting America’s pocketbooks in the midst of rising inflation.  But on a deeper level, Putin’s actions give rise to autocrats, dictators, and fascists everywhere.  His invasion makes it more likely that China will engage in tougher actions against Taiwan, the Uyghur people, and increased military conflict in the South China Sea.  Putin’s assault provides cover for a growing fascist movement throughout Europe.  And most disturbingly, his assault against Ukraine is being applauded by the radical right and ultraconservative movements here in the United States.  There was once a time when the Republican Party labeled Russia as the “Evil Empire” – now, with today’s Republican Party openly embracing autocracy and working to dismantle democratic institutions, Putin is considered a hero by many who call themselves conservatives.

The Center for Racial and Social Justice stands firmly with the people of Ukraine and denounce the actions of the Russian Federation and President Vladimir Putin.  We encourage everyone to stand in support of Ukraine in denouncing this violent and unjust war of aggression against the sovereign country of Ukraine. #Ukraine #UkrainiansWillResist.  For more information on how you can help.
