It seems as if the Haitian people can’t catch a break.  The country suffers from all forms of instability – disasters that are both natural and man-made.  The Haitian people, like human beings everywhere, deserve food, shelter, safety, and the opportunity to make a living and provide for their families.

Like so many people the world over, Haitian migrants, through wit, ingenuity, and sheer courage, have made it to the United States-Mexico border seeking refuge, seeking sanctuary.  They should be allowed to have an asylum hearing, as many migrants from Latin American countries are allowed to do.  They have a compelling and convincing case, as we witness the devastation and uncertainty the exists in Haiti.

But instead of compassion, the Haitians are met with brute force.  Instead of humanitarian aid, they have been met with whips and horses as they are terrorized and chased away from America, simply for desiring the right to live.  The images coming from the Mexico-Texas border are inhumane.  But that is the point.  When it comes to acknowledging the humanity of the world’s people, Haiti is always last on the list.

What is happening to the Haitian refugees is the epitome of Racial and Social INJUSTICE.  America’s disdain for Haiti has existed ever since they dared to successfully overthrow their colonial oppressors – and they have been paying for it ever since.

The world has seen this brutality and America has been shamed.  Now, over 1000 migrants have been allowed entry into the United States.  But there is still much more work to be done. If you would like to support the Haitian migrants at the U.S. border, please donate to the following organizations:

  • Val Verde Border Humanitarian Coalition
  • Black Freedom Factory
  • Haitian Bridge
  • Until Freedom

The world is an unstable place, and the United States must create a comprehensive, fair, and consistent immigration policy to assist people the world over from receiving sanctuary in this country.  In the name of humanity, in the name of justice, this must be done.
